WHAT ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT?

(Continued)

Share |
Certainly we must work to provide food for ouselves and our families. Solomon wrote, "The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing; But the soul of the diligent shall be made fat" (Prov 13:4). And, "Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread" (Prov. 20:13). Paul writes in 2 Thessonians 3:10, "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, If any will not work, neither let him eat."
Jesus is here saying that we must not worry that we might not have enough to eat. It is our responsibilty to work. Then we must trust God to provide for us (See Joel 2:23; Zech. 10:1; James 5:7; 1 Cor. 3:6-9; 1 Tim. 6:17).
What You Will Drink
The same applies here as with "what you will eat." Jesus did say in Mark 9:41:
For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
But Jesus is not saying there that we should expect hand-outs. On the contrary. In the context, Jesus is correcting an error on the part of the the apostles. They had rebuked one whom they had seen casting out devils in His name. Jesus teaches them that one who does good deeds in His name is with them, not against them. This includes those who would give them a cup of water in His name. That would assume that they needed a cup of water. Remember, the apostles traveled, likely by foot, regularly with Jesus as He taught the people and worked miracles. Sometimes they became thirsty and hungry and a cool cup of water from a caring stranger would come in handy (See also Matt. 12:1)! Similarly, Jesus taught them to give a cup of cool water to those in need. For example, He taught them in Mark 9:41:
For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
The point is that Jesus taught the apostles that it was not wrong to receive help from others when we are in need. Indeed, that is one of the ways God takes care of His people - through the generous hands of careing individuals and groups. The over all point is that we must not worry about food and drink, but trust God to provide for us, either through the fruits of our labor, or, if it comes to that, the generosity of others.
What You Will Wear
This is one every teenager is afflicted with. But, seriously, some do worry about whether they will have sufficient clothing. Jesus is not talking about fashion or selection. He is referring to the basic necessity of clothing. Yet, He says, "Do not worry." We need to do as Peter urges us in 1 Peter 5:7, cast "all your care upon him; for he careth for you."

"Is not Life More Than Food and the Body More Than Clothing?"

Jesus asks a rhetorical question designed to make His hearers think. What is His point? His point is that God created our bodies and gave us life. So, He will provide what we need to take care of our bodies and lives. Knowing that, why should we worry?
Our Lord illustrates the point by pointing to the birds. They do not plant, reap, or store food for the winter. Yet, God feeds them. Then He asks another rhetorical question, "Are you not of more value than they?" (Matt 6:26-27, NKJV).
Another question: "Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?" ( Matt 6:27). Worrying will not make us grow any taller. Neither will worrying feed us.
