Jesus said in Matthew 5:17, "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." Paul writes in Galatians 3:24 (NKJV), "Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith." Tutor ("Schoolmaster," KJV) is from a Greek word meaning, "A tutor i.e. a guardian and guide of boys." So Paul says the Old Testament law was a tutor or guide to bring the Jews to Christ. Paul writes in Romans 15:4, "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope." The Old Testament, though no longer a law for men to follow today (See Hebrews 8:1-13), it is still a valuable learning source to help us to understand the New Testament.
What does the Old Testament teach us about the role of water in God's plan of salvation? We will explore this question in this article.

Types and Antitypes

One of the ways the Bible helps us understand important themes is by the use of types and antitypes. Paul writes in Romans 5:14, "Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come." Easton writes on the word translated, figure (Type, NKJV):
It properly means a "model" or "pattern" or "mould" into which clay or wax was pressed, that it might take the figure or exact shape of the mould. The word "type" is generally used to denote a resemblance between something present and something future, which is called the "antitype."
A number of events, objects, and laws in the Old Testament serve as types which find their fulfillment, or antitypes, in the New.

The Crossing of the Red Sea

In Exodus 14:1-31, as Israel fled from bondage in Egypt, Moses was stalled in their journey by the Red Sea. Pharaoh had changed his mind about letting them go and was pursuing them with his chariots. God sent a "strong east wind" (Exodus 14:20) and the sea divided, allowing God's people to cross on dry land. The Egyptians tried to do the same thing, but God restored the water to its normal place and they were drowned. Israel landed safely on the other side.
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 10:1-2, "Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea" (See Exodus 13:21-22; 14:19-20). So the cloud and sea are a type of baptism.

The Water from the Rock

In Exodus 17:1-6, Israel complained because there was no water to drink. God instructed Moses to smite a rock in Horeb and water would come forth. Thus they were saved from dying of thirst by water from the rock.
In 1 Corinthians 10:4, "And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ." So Paul presents the rock in Horeb as a type of Christ who is the Savior of "whosoever believeth" (John 3:16).

The Flood

In Genesis 6:1-8:11, Moses describes the worldwide flood that God sent to destroy evil people of the world. Only eight people survived - Noah, who "found grace in the eyes of the Lord" (Genesis 6:8), his wife, and three sons and their wives.
