Thomas Paine wrote the words, "These are the times that try men's souls," in the first line of an article in a series of articles entitled, The American Crises, published from 1776-1783, during the American Revolutionary War. The essays constitute Paine's ongoing support for an independent and self-governing America through the many severe crises of the Revolutionary War. General Washington found the first essay so inspiring, he ordered that it be read to the troops at Valley Forge (USHistory.org). Today, we are in the midst of two new crises, the most important which to many of us is the Covid-19 or Corona Virus crises (the other being the lawlessness in our streets). These are certainly the "times that try our souls!"
We are living in uncertain times. Who would have thought that a World-Wide Pandemic would hit our country with over a hundred thousand deaths, grocery shelves would be empty, public Schools, colleges, and universities would stop meeting for classes, stores and restaurants closed, unemployment skyrocketing, funerals and
