TIME IS RUNNING OUT
September 10, 2017
Time. Oxford Living Dictionaries defines time, "The indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present, and future regarded as a whole." They also define time, "A point of time as measured in hours and minutes past midnight or noon." As I write this, the time is 9:11 p.m. Most of us possess at least one device for measuring time. It is important to us to know what time it is so that we will not miss or be late to something important to us. But do you realize that time is running out?
Why Is Time Running Out?
Please read 2 Peter 3:1-11. Peter begins by reminding his readers that God keeps his promises (1 Pet. 3:1-10). He reminds them that the prophets had foretold the life and work of Jesus Christ.
The prophets had, among many things, foretold the judgment. For example, Daniel wrote in Daniel 12:2:
And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
Many had scoffed at the second coming, asking, "And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation" (2 Peter 3:4).
They scoffed because they were willingly ignorant of the fact that the world had once been destroyed by water, and would be destroyed again (2 Pet. 3:5-6). Their willful ignorance arose from their lusts (2 Pet. 3:3).
Peter then reminds them that just like the world was once destroyed by water, it would be destroyed again. How?
Before explaining how the world would be destroyed the next time, he took the time to remind his readers that God keeps His promises. He writes in 2 Peter 3:9:
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
The end is coming. But not because He wants to destroy mankind. That is why He gives us time to repent before He destroys the earth, so that we may escape the destruction.
How Will the End Come?
Peter writes in 2 Peter 3:10:
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
