The Pearl of Great Price

Pearls are precious stones found in shellfish. When this merchant found one of "great price," he sold all that he had and bought it. As a pearl merchant, he probably had many pearls of less value than this one. He knew that, if he sold all his inventory at a lower price, he could make enough to buy the pearl of great price which he could then sell for much more money. "All that he had" may refer to all of his possessions. This must have indeed been a pearl of "great price!"

The Meaning of the Parable

Jesus says, "The kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls" (Matthew 13:45). We all seek many things. Some are of more value than others. But there is nothing of more value than Jesus and His kingdom. He said in Matthew 6:33, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." He says in context, "Do not worry about even the most necessary things to life, these things will be given you if you seek the kingdom and God's righteousness first" (Matt.6:31-33).

The kingdom parables are designed to impress upon us the truth that the kingdom of Christ, the church, must be the most important thing in our lives. The Parable of the Pearl of Great Price and the one before it, the Parable of the Hidden Treasure (Matt. 13:44), especially illustrate this point. Obeying, worshipping, serving the Lord should be our top priority.
Is the Lord's church, and His righteousness, your "Pearl of Great Price?"
