FOUR NEW YEAR'S COMMITMENTS
Relationships are important. The University of Minnisota Taking Charge of Your Health and Wellbeing website published an article entitled, "Why Personal Relationships Are Important." It lists four reasons: live longer, deal with stress, be healthier, feel richer. Indeed, God created us to be family and social beings. He said in the beginning, "And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him" (Gen 2:18). Later, Paul urged in 1 Thessalonians 4:9:
But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.
That clause, "one another," is found more than forty times in the New Testament, thirteen in the writings of John alone. Relationships are important!
Often, relationships are broken by sin, misunderstandings, or other circumstances. Broken relationships are sometimes hard to mend. Broken relationships cause sadness, loneliness, and resentment.
Broken relationships are hard, not impossible, to mend. It takes an effort by both parties to mend a relationship. But, often, one party needs to put in the most effort and time. Why not be that one? Why not make a commitment to mend your broken relationships in the coming year?
# 3 - Commit to Turning Your Back on Sin
Hopefully, by now you have made the first three commitments. But keeping those three may not be possible until you have kept the fourth. Sin may be the cause of your broken relationships. It is a sin to hold grudges. Perhaps you need to take a close look at yourself and make some personal changes before you can end your grudge against another. And, of course, you may have sin in your past that you have not truly repented of and obtained forgiveness for. Do that. repent of all past and current sins, confess your faults (James 5:16). Obtain God's forgiveness and that of those against whom you have sinned. Commit to living a life free from sin.
Paul taught in Acts 17:30, "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent..." He wrote in 2 Corinthians 7:10, "For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death."
The wish that is on the lips of most people this time of year is "Happy New Year!" One bid way that you can ensure that you will have a truly happy New Year is if you commit to forgetting those things that are behind, commit to giving up all grudges, commit to restoring relationships, and commit to turning your back on sin.
Have a very happy New year! ¡Tenga un muy ¡feliz Año Nuevo!
