At this point in Luke's account of the birth of Jesus (Luke 2:8-111), Jesus had just been born. The wise men had not yet visited the baby Jesus (Matt. 2:1-11). There was a group of shepherds in the field keeping watch over their flock in the field. A rare event occurred, likely which had never happened to shepherds in the field before. An angel, then a multitude, of angels appeared to the shepherds with amazing, but welcome, news. It is this even that we will explore in this article.
The Shepherds in the Field
Luke informs us, "And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night" (Luke 2:8). This was not unusual in ancient times. Albert Barnes writes:
