Previous: Unity in a Time of Division IntroductionJohn writes, "These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee." (John 17:1). This prayer was prayed by our Lord just before He went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray before he was betrayed by Judas (Matt. 26:36-49; Mark 14:32-45; 18:1-2). As we will see, at this hour, knowing that He would soon be betrayed and sentenced to death on the cross, prayed mainly, not for Himself, but for His disciples, and ultimately, you and me. At a time such as this, most people would have prayed mainly for themselves, but not our Lord! After all, that is why He had given up equality with God in heaven and come to this earth to be tempted and suffer many things as a man (John 17:4-5. See also Rom. 5).
