HOW SHOULD THE CHRISTIAN RESPOND TO THE CORONA VIRUS?
And said, O Lord God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee?
Paul writes in Romans 8:28, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." We see an example of this in Genesis 50:15-20. After Jacob died, his sons, fearing their brother, Joseph, whom they had sold into slavery in Egypt, would hate them and retaliate, begged his forgiveness. Joseph responded in Genesis 50:20, "But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it
unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive." The brothers could not see that their cruel act against Joseph was used by God to save His chosen nation of Israel from perishing because of the ravaging famine. Ultimately, our own salvation was preserved by their act, as Jesus came from the nation of Israel!
We, like Joseph's brothers, can not always see that God may bring good results from bad situations. He is in charge. We may see a disastrous end to the Corona virus outbreak. But God is in charge of all things. We must not worry, but trust Him to make things turn out well. One thing I learned in life is that things we worry about seldom come to pass!
We must Pray
Paul writes in 1 Timothy 2:8, "I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting." Remember, Paul wrote in Philippians 4:6, "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer...let your requests be known unto God." In other words, "Don't worry, pray."
John writes in 1 John 5:14, "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us..." He continues in 1 John 5:15, "And if wei know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him." God answers prayer. If we trust in Him, He will provide what is best for us. That does not mean He will give us exactly what we ask, for He knows better than we do what is best. We can be sure that whatever God provides is the right thing!
In due time, we will see God's wisdom in what He does. I'm reminded of a song by Garth Brooks, "Unanswered Prayers." Though I do not particularly like the term, "unanswered prayers," Brooks makes the point that there are some things that we ask for that God does not give, and we learn later that God has given us something better.
What should the Christian's response to the Corona virus be? First, do not panic. Second, follow the government and medical professionals' guidelines for avoiding the virus and preventing spread to others. Third, trust God. Pray, Be patient.
God is in charge. God will take care of us. I saw an interesting post on Facebook just today. It quoted Josh 1:9, "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." It is interesting that the scripture reffernce is Joshua 1:9, and the official name of the virus is COVID-19. Someone else posted the scripture reference with an acrostic on letters of Covid. Christ Over Viruses and Infectious Diseases. I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but it is all true.
Trust God. Pray. We will be okay.
