WHY THE BIBLE IS THE GREATEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN
We have seen that the Bible is the greatest book ever written because it tells us where we are going. Everyone of us will either go to heaven or hell. The choice is up to us. But, how do we make that choice? If we choose to go to heaven, how do we get there? Let's let the greatest book ever written answer that question, for only it has the answer!
First, we will notice that the Bible is the greatest book ever written because it tells us about the greatest Savior that ever lived. Why do we need a savior? Because of sin. John writes, 1 John 3:4, "Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law." The New King James translation reads "...sin is lawlessness." The New International Version reads, "Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness." So, when one breaks God's law, he sins.
The very first sin is described in Genesis 3. God gave the first couple (See Genesis 1 and 2 and Chapter III, "Where We Came From," page 3), a very simple law. It contained three commandments, two positive and one negative: 1. Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth; 2. Subdue the earth, and have domminion over every living thing (Gen 1:28); and, 3. "Of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." Adam and Eve broke God's law, and ate the fruit. This was the first sin. A main purpose of the Bible is to show man how to avoid sin and how to be freed from its consequences. Sin is a problem for us all, and all need salvation from sin. Paul writes, Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." He writes, in Romans 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
We have seen that all will either spend eternity in Heaven or Hell (Chapter III, "Tells Us Where We Are Going") - we need a savior to save us from eternity in Hell. We need a savior to lead us into Heaven. God first gave a hint of a coming savior after man sinned in the Garden of Eden: Genesis 3:15, "And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed: it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." The Bible tells us who our Savior is: Ephesians 5:23, "For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body." The Book of John is a great place to learn about our Savior. Notice John 1: "In the beginning ...." John is writing about someone who has
