What Is The Best Way To Study The Bible?
November 20, 2011
Last week: What Is Your Soul Worth?
For one to derive the most benefit from Bible study, the most effective methods must be used. A haphazard and careless study of the Bible produces little good. Although Daily Daily Bible Reading is greatly encouraged, it, alone is not suficient to understand the Bible, and get the most from it. What is the best way to study the Bible?
First, one must have the proper attitude toward the Bible. He must believe it to be the inspired word of God (See 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21). One must love the Lord exceedingly (Psalm 119:97). He must find great joy in God's word (Ps. 1:2). He must esteem the Word of God above all things (Job 23:12). He must have a deep reverence for God's word (Ps. 119:161). He must have a desire to remember God's word (Ps. 119:16). He must put great hope in God's word (Ps. 119:74, 81, 147). He must give time for meditation upon the scriptures (Ps. 1:2). He must obey the scriptures (Ps. 119:67).
Second, it is important to bear in mind who the author of the passage being studied is. In would be good to do a character study of the author to come to an understanding of his style.
Third, it is important to understand to whom the text was written. What do you know of the recipient(s)? What do you know of their situation and history? What do know of the reason why the author addressed the passage to them? What was their relation, and how were they serving Him? What were their particular problems or weaknesses?
Fourth, it is important to know Of whom does the passage speak, and what do you know about them? Failure to understand these facts may lead to a misunderstanding of the passage.
Fifth, it is important to know what the nature of the writing of the text is. Is it prophecy, proverbs, letters, etc.? Failure to understand these facts may lead to a misunderstanding of the passage.
Sixth, it is important to knowwhen the text was written. Knowing this will help determine what law (Partiarchal, Mosaic, Christian) was in effect when the things discussed were set forth. It will also help us to see if the text has direct application to our lives, or if it was intended only for the recipient of the passage.
Seventh, it is important to know what place the writer was in when the text was written? The surrounings and atmosphere of a text often contribute to its meaning. For example, many expressions of Paul's letters take on more meaning when we realize that he was in prison when he wrote them.
One must approach the Bible impartially and without predjudice. He must earnestly seek information. He must not make the Bible teach what fits his preconceived ideas or opinions. He must make the Bible to shape his thinking, decisions convictions.
Here are some helpful hints to effective Bible study. Make notes and markings in your Bible. Do not hesitate to mark your Bible. The ink and paper are not holy ... the message is. Memorize important texts, names of books, names of the apostles, and other important or vital information. Test you knowledge by reviewing or quoting what you have learned. Use a concordance to find other texts which are related to the subject in a particular passage. Bring the texts together for a complete view of what the Bible teaches. Study the passage in its context. This means to study the passage as it relates to what comes before it and after it. Sometimes the context of a passage may include the entire chapter or book in which it is found. Failure to understand the context of a passage can lead to failure to understand the passage properly. A passage must always be interpreted in light of what the entire Bible teaches. If an interpretation contradicts another passage in the Bible, one of the passages has been misinterpreted or misapplied. The Bible does not contradict itself!
A careful, prayerful, open-minded study of the Bible, with a desire to learn and apply its teachings properly to your life will be rewarded with a rich understanding of this great book . Be patient in your study. To fully understand the Bible will take a lifetime. It is a constant, but rewarding effort. May God be with you as you study His word!
